Viracopos is the 1st airport from Brazil to offer services pallet destruction and wooden packaging.

The concessionaire Aeroportos Brasil Viracopos informs that the International Airport of Viracopos, in Campinas (SP), is the first airport in Brazil to offer the new destruction service, on Brazilian soil, of packages and wooden supports.

The procedure applies to pallets and other wooden packages that accompany imported cargo and that do not have a stamp or valid certificate of phytosanitary treatment.

With this, importing companies will have more streamlined processes and will have costs reduced by up to 50%, facilitating transit for foreign trade from the TECA (Cargo Terminal) of Viracopos.

In addition to saving time and reducing costs, the waste from the destroyed wood will be sent to some industries for use as biomass in industrial ovens. The concessionaire Aeroportos Brasil Viracopos, which manages the airport, also hopes to attract more import customers because of the new solution, which will simplify the operation of companies.

The Ordinance of the Agricultural Defense Secretariat of the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply (MAPA) that regulates the activity was published on 11/08 and the airport will offer the service to importers from 11/21.

Before the implementation of the project, the importing company was obliged to return to the country of origin of the cargo the packaging and wooden supports considered non-compliant, which took from three to ten days, in addition to significantly burdening the customer due to the cost of air freight for the return of these pieces of wood. Now, wood can be destroyed on the same day, minimizing costs for companies and airlines.

Recognized as the main cargo airport in the country, Viracopos quickly adapted to the new rules established by MAPA Ordinance No. by Brazil, and the components and pieces of wood used for their manufacture, and makes other arrangements”.

The implementation of the project was coordinated by the Commercial Cargo Management, in partnership with the Cargo Operations Management of the concessionaire.

“The studies began six months ago with the aim of innovating once again, launching a pioneering service at airports in Brazil, with the objective of destroying wood in the primary zone, without the Importer having the need to link the export process to provide for the return of the pallet condemned by the Ministry of Agriculture, which was a bureaucratic and costly procedure, with costs of R$ 3,000.00 per return process, on average”, said Commercial Cargo Manager, Marina Giffu.

The services will be carried out by the company Nikkey, which has a base in Viracopos and is currently the only company approved for the provision of this service by MAPA, which will also manage the service.

According to the Ordinance, “the objects of this Ordinance are wooden packaging and supports intended for the packaging of goods in international transit, wooden packaging components and wooden parts that will be used to make packaging or wooden supports, that have not undergone sufficient processing to remove or eliminate pests”.

“With this, Viracopos Airport is once again anticipating foreign trade trends in line with the best world practices and presents a practical and efficient solution that will provide more agility and less bureaucracy for companies that bring their cargo through the Airport Terminal. Viracopos Cargo, said Viracopos Cargo Operations manager, Ricardo Luize.
